Resumen
¿Cómo y por qué cambió tanto el pensamiento político de Octavio Paz? Este ar- tículo distingue tres diferentes etapas ideológicas de Paz (Primeros Escritos, Madurez y Fin de Siglo) y analiza cómo su percepción de los sistemas políticos lo llevó a tener una mayor o menor cercanía con el régimen mexicano: su pa- pel como intelectual público de izquierda minoritaria, primero, como intelec- tual sistémico y casi orgánico de abierta derecha, después, y en algún momento —¿1968?— como intelectual que rompe con el régimen y vuelve a la postura independiente del libre pensador. Posteriormente, exploro los días de Paz en México, encarnando una postura sumamente liberal, cercana al régimen y a sus políticas, pero al mismo tiempo un crítico cáustico, demandante, implacable en su papel de cuestionar y aparecer como interlocutor independiente que dialoga con los grandes problemas nacionales y latinoamericanos. Es mi hipótesis que existe una relación entre la orientación ideológica de este intelectual público y su cercanía con el sistema político mexicano. Mientras mayor fue su desencanto de la izquierda, en la que primero militó con tanta vehemencia, mayor fue su cercanía con el sistema político mexicano, con el gobierno del Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), a quien no dudó en denostar, servir y cuestionar.

Abstract
Why the political thought of Octavio Paz changed so much along his life? This article distinguishes between three ideological phases Paz went through (First political writings, Matureness and At the turn of the Century). I analyse how his perception of the international political systems influenced his attitude towards the Mexican regime: as a public intellectual supporting the minority-left wing, during his youth and formative years; as an official, openly liberal and almost organic intellectual for many years; and, after a breakdown with the government —must probably in 1968—, as an independent thinker, maintaining a dialogue with some of the greatest challenges of Mexican and Latin-American contemporary difficulties. It is my hypothesis that there is a relation between his ideological orientation and his understanding and closeness with the Mexican political system. The more he got disenchanted about the left ideologies and the way they incarnate power, the greater his rapprochement with the authoritarian Mexican government, with the PRI (the perpetual Institutional, Revolutionary Party, always in office), the same government he did not hesitate to serve, but also to condemn.
